I was about to not watch this video. I’m glad I did.

love
is a dirty, dirty word
so fly
like a dirty, broken bird.
swallow, your fear
is not worth the effort
swallow, your tongue
will make no effect
swallow, your hand
needs reach for the handle
swallow. then blow out
the burning down candle.
love
is a word
so fly
like a bird.

This almost made me cry. It perfectly voiced what I have been thinking about for the last few months. This has been happening a lot lately. Whenever I hear or see something that talks about following your dreams and doing whatever you need to be happy, I feel overwhelmed. Before, I felt overwhelmed by the thought that I might be giving up on everything that I wanted to do. It was a feeling of hopelessness and surrender. But now, it is an overwhelming feeling of determination. I can go to MIT and still pursue whatever it is that I want to do, regardless of whether it ends up being film, writing, engineering, or neuroscience. I am determined to build a happy life for myself. If in 20 years I am sitting around, unsatisfied, I hope that I come back here and reread this and get my act together because goddamnit, I deserve to be happy.
I shot this, not intending to make it into a video, but some of the shots were just so beautiful that I had to do something with them. So, it has basically turned into an experiment in light and editing. It’s not perfect but if I were to try to make it better, I would feel compelled to fly back to San Francisco to reshoot it with the intention of making it into a video.
It seems as though my mid-life crisis is no longer so much of a crisis.
I thought that by committing to MIT, I would be closing the door to the film industry and I saw no windows through which I could climb to get myself there. Likewise, by committing to USC, I was under the impression that I would be forcing myself through one door with no option of exiting through other windows to go on a different path.
After meeting with the president of Paramount Studios Group and an MIT grad who works along side him, I have realized that this is entirely untrue. As it turns out, a film degree from USC does not mean that much in the real world. Though it gives you practical experience and a better chance at making connections, it is by no means a direct ticket into the industry, nor is it the only way to get there. And according to the people I met with, having a degree from a first tier school is the only thing that will really get people’s attention. The MIT grad was an engineering major but is now working for Paramount. He said that a degree in something other than film allows for so many other possibilities and ways to get access to the film industry.
At MIT I could do architecture and potentially enter the film industry as a set designer, or I could do comparative media studies and focus on video games which could help me with special effects. I could do brain and cognitive sciences and use my knowledge of how the brain perceives light, color, etc. to become the best cinematographer ever.
Now it is apparent to me that MIT may not have a direct door, but it opens thousands of windows. And just to reinforce this idea, heres a picture of one of the dorms at MIT:

… it has 5,538 windows… I think I’m covered.
Words cannot express how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to speak with the people that I have spoken to about this process. From you wonderful people on tumblr who have supported me in what I want to ultimately do, to the amazing people from Paramount that I met last week and showed me that there is more than one way to get to where I want to be. I have not committed yet, and I probably will not officially decide until the deadline, but as of right now, I think MIT, out of all the options I have right now, will be the best place for me.
